Recognition for Impressive Innovation Performance: Christian Wulff Congratulates Autobus Oberbayern GmbH from Munich on Joining the TOP 100. The award ceremony, held as part of the German Mittelstand Summit, takes place on Friday, 26 June, in Heidelberg for all mid-sized companies that received the TOP 100 seal of approval at the beginning of the year. The former Federal President and Minister-President serves as mentor for the competition, now held for the 33rd time. In the scientific selection process, Autobus Oberbayern impressed in size category C (more than 200 employees in Germany), particularly in the category of Innovation-Promoting Top Management.
The TOP 100 company profile published to mark the award reads as follows:
Autobus Oberbayern GmbH combines tradition with modern mobility. The family-owned Munich company develops flexible concepts and solutions for large-scale events, tourism, and scheduled services. It relies on data-driven planning, technological support, and clear values — setting it clearly apart from conventional bus operators.
The fourth-generation family business covers a broad range of passenger transport — from scheduled services to charter and tourism operations through to event logistics. Alongside its core services, the Munich company continually develops new products such as internationally bookable day trips. Operational experience is combined with data-driven development. Sustainability also plays a central role, for example through the full conversion of the coach fleet to HVO100 fuel, which enables significant CO₂ savings. "Our decisions are not made on purely economic grounds — they follow a values-oriented understanding with a long-term perspective," says Managing Director Nico Schoenecker.
Projects as Dynamic Systems
Projects are never implemented in a standardised way, but conceived individually. For large-scale events such as sports fixtures or concerts, the company works with interdisciplinary project groups that develop and evaluate various scenarios. Decision-making is based on both client requirements and operational feasibility. Digital tools such as GPS tracking and real-time data enable flexible control during live operations. Processes are continuously reviewed: proven measures are systematically incorporated into standard procedures. At the same time, feedback from driving operations is actively integrated, for example via digital communication and reporting systems.
Consistency and Pragmatism
What sets Autobus Oberbayern apart from many other providers is the combination of pragmatic execution and a clear sense of purpose. Innovation is not staged — it emerges from concrete requirements and operational experience. The company is prepared to take deliberately more cost-intensive or higher-risk paths when they make long-term sense, for example in sustainable technologies. At the same time, people remain central. "We examine technological developments such as AI or autonomous driving specifically, but always as a complement to the existing system — not as an end in themselves," says Nico Schoenecker.
